The authentic Finnish sauna remains a sanctuary of raw, organic honesty. At Driftwood Saunas, we believe a sauna is not just a room you sit in; it is an enclosed space where you are soaking in the entirety of the atmosphere. The materials you choose don't just change the look—they change the very chemistry of the air you breathe and the quality of the heat on your skin. Natural materials are the non-negotiable foundation of a true Finnish build. A common mistake in modern sauna kits and / or infrared saunas is the use of treated materials and hidden plastic barriers. In a high-heat environment, these materials release microscopic chemicals into the air. Genuine Finnish design relies on untreated, thermally stable wood.

Species like Cedar possess low thermal conductivity. This means the wood absorbs the heat without becoming scalding to the touch. Natural wood acts as a humidity buffer. Using natural, quarried stones rather than ceramic or synthetic alternatives is vital for the "softness" of the steam. Natural stone like slate holds heat longer. Even after the heater is turned off, the stones continue to dry out the room, preserving the wood and ensuring your sauna lasts for decades, not years. There is a profound psychological shift that happens when you step into a space made of stone, wood, and glass. Natural wood releases phytoncides—organic compounds that have been shown to lower stress and boost the immune system. You cannot replicate this with a "pine-scented" oil in a plastic-lined room. In addition, we know that natural materials age gracefully. A Driftwood sauna is a true heirloom sauna that lasts for generations. It becomes a part of the landscape, rather than an appliance taking up space. "A sauna should feel like an extension of the earth. When you strip away the synthetic, you aren't just building a room; you're reclaiming a ritual."

Natural materials can have personal meaning and connection behind them. Using what feels right to you is important -- if you have any materials that are special to you and would like them to be incorporated into your sauna project, we are happy to get creative with you and see what can be done!
